Reverend John Marcell

Reverend John Marcell was the Pastor of the Mount Gillion Baptist Church in Prairieville, LA. for 20 years
He was a native of Geismar, LA. He was the son of the late Rev. Chester and Vinnie Ambeau Marcell. Reverend Marcell and his lovely wife, Gloria, have four children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Reverend Marcell was a graduate of Prairieville High School. He served in the United States Air Force as a Finance Specialist.
He furthered his education at Southern University. He also is a retiree of the Gillis W. Long Hansens Disease Center with 39 years of service where he was employed as a Histopathology Technician. He received many meritorious awards
including, "Employee of the Year" for the Clinical Branch. He has also served in various civic and community
organizations such as: The Geismar Volunteer Fire Department.
Reverend Marcell was called to the ministry in 1981 and licensed to preach in 1982 by the late Rev. Albert Darville at the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Geismar, LA. In 1988 he was appointed Assistant Pastor of the Church. In 1989 he received a Certificate of Ordination from the East Ascension Minister Alliance and was ordained at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Religious Education in 1986 and a Bachelor's Degree in Theology in 1988 from InterBaptist Theological Center of Houston, TX, at the Baton Rouge, LA campus.
Reverend Marcell also received his Master's Degree of Theology in 1992 and Doctorate Degree of Theology in 1994 from Christian Bible College in Baton Rouge, LA., where he was also an instructor for the Doctoral Program at Christian Bible College for 2 years.
In May 1993, he was elected Pastor of the Mount Gillion Baptist Church until his death. Under his leadership the
church membership grow tremendously. He was instrumental in several expansions. Some of these include: A new metal roof on the church, parking area and canopy for the handicapped members, enlargement of the parking lot, expansion of the santuary and cemetery land purchase. His other accomplishments include the installation of the first "Mother of the Church”, formulation of the youth group "CLIC" (Children Living in Christ) and the establishment of an Education Fund for college students. After pastoring Mt. Gillion Baptist Church for 20 years the Lord said John your work on earth is now complete. He called him home June 22, 2013 around 1:00p.m. Rev. Marcell loved God, his church
and all God’s people. Rev. John Marcell will be truly missed.
